Recognizing Resveratrol

Remember those studies suggesting that red wine is good for you? Well it turns out, the reason why isn’t just in the wine; it’s also in raw cacao, blueberries, the skin of red grapes, and other foods. It’s Resveratrol, a compound that may have many therapeutic benefits, including immune system support and antioxidant properties. Resveratrol is part of a group of compounds called polyphenols that protect the body from free radical damage. Resveratrol has been reported to have some great benefits, but to-date, there have only been limited clinical trials done on this compound to know for sure.

Here’s what we know.

In a study published in the Journal of Neuroscience in 2014, researchers at the Charité – Universitätsmedizin Berlin in Germany found better short-term memory in those taking Resveratrol. According to the Mayo Clinic, Resveratrol may be the key ingredient in red wine that has shown to help prevent blood vessel damage. Researchers at Georgia State University found that Resveratrol may also help with inflammation.
